Tracing the Shadow by Sarah Ash

Title: Tracing the Shadow
Author: Sarah Ash
Series: The Alchymist's Legacy, #1.
Genre: Fantasy
Setting: The imaginary kingdom of Francia.
Keywords: Inquisition, saint, mage, opera, guardsmen
Reason for Reading: I picked it up at the library and thought it looked interesting.
Finished In: Months. It was slow in the middle.
Pages: 414
Copyright Date: 2008
Cover: A man gazes at the reader with a serious expression. A hawk perches on a barren branch behind him.
First line: "Ruaud de Lanvaux staggered as he passed beneath the archway into fabled Ondhessar."
Best part: The characters and their motivations seemed very real to me.
Worst part: The slow pace in the middle.
Imaginary Theme Song: A spiritually themed opera. Alas that my knowledge of the genre does not allow me to be more specific.
Grade: C
Recommended for: Fans of fantasy with spiritual and musical elements.
Related Reads: It reminded me a bit of the Valdemar series, though it was not as compelling.

As a small girl, Klervie watched her father burn for the sin of heresy. Now she is a young woman with an amazing gift for music - and a dangerous secret.
As a young man, Jagu lost a friend to foul soul-stealing sorcery.
Circumstances bring these two together. Both burn for revenge. Will they be strong enough to find a way, or will they be distracted by their own dreams and ambitions?
