I think that many of us do not spend much time considering how much of what we rely on comes from far away. If your water, power, and heat were turned off, if the grocery stores were closed (or their supplies had been depleted) how prepared would you be?
For those like myself who are thinking "not prepared enough" I'd like to recommend this preparedness checklist: http://www.whentechfails.com/node/24
And this 72-hour survival kit list: http://www.whentechfails.com/node/23
As grownups in good standing, we all have a responsibility to think about these things, at a minimum, for ourselves and our families.
